final

I chose this image for my final piece as I find it has more interest then the other images I have produce, lighting and composition really add to its image and the use of the ‘obey’ stamp on the hat of the subject centres the image and draws the eye to the image.

evaluation

I produced my work for the unit in a studio-based environment as to control the lighting whilst I photographed my subject. I wanted to control the lighting as to regulate the detail and definition in the subject’s faces, producing images, which appear to have natural and artificial light sources. I could use the image I have taken to use as a reference for my drawings and painting.

I chose to research black and white photography artists because I believe black and white photography as I believe it has more interest to the image, it shows definition in the image, without the tonal qualities, it almost shows its own line quality.

I have chosen to present my final piece online; I feel by doing so it will allow me to broadcast my work in a wider variety in a larger target audience, being able to publish worldwide with little complications and cost.

I find the context of my work is more editorial then other forms of photography, although I find its qualities to be more beneficial in a more personal way, as I can use them as references in my artwork to paint from.

The strengths of my work are that I offer detail in my work shown of the individual subject. Although I believe I could have produced more photographs.

studio

Whilst photographing I focused on experimenting with high key and low key photography, by rearranging the light and composition, I have varied the focus of the features and interest point of the image.

as I use photography as a reference fort my drawings and painting, being able to alter the light source creates a great image to work from.

the sharpness and contrast of light and dark makes the image a stronger and adds more detail.
i like the way the lighting differentiates between the different images, some appearing to have a natural light quality to them, the others show an obvious display of artificial light.

photographers

Irving Penn

with a clever use of light and dark Irving Penn can manipulate an image to show its interest, distorting the shades and dimensions of an image to and making it his own.

He uses fairly simplistic composition and keeping the images de-cluttered it adds more interest to the subject matter.

David Bailey

similar to Irving Penn by focusing on the subject rather then its surroundings he manages to make it appear more interesting. also the adjustment in the lighting add to the interest.

Albert Watson

like the other photographers Albert Watson uses the different positioned light sources to add focus and interest to the subject matter

Unit 2

Throughout the course of my meetings and connections brief I have been focusing on the human anatomy and producing work based around the anatomy and form, as I don't have many dissected bodies and severed heads to photograph, I will have to make do with a few skull replicas and photography focusing on the figure.

For other references I will be using images from anatomy books and at images on the Internet.

I have chosen this subject to explore for unit 2, as it will help develop my practical work on my main qualification.
